Procedure

2-cyano-2-phenylacetohydrazide [Int-1A] (3.27 g, 18.3 mmol, 1.0 eq) and pentane-2,4-dione (1.89 mL, 18.3 mmol, 1.0 eq) were dissolved in 59 mL acidic acid and stirred for 3 h at 60° C. The resulting yellow suspension was cooled to rt and the precipitate was isolated by filtration. The solid was washed with hexane and dried to give 1.20 g (27% yield) of the title compound.
