Procedure

A solution of ethyl 2,3-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)quinoline-6-carboxylate (83 mg, 0.20 mmol, 1.00 equiv) and sodium hydroxide (40 mg, 1.00 mmol, 5.00 equiv) in methanol (10 mL) and water (1 mL) were placed in a 25-mL round-bottom flask and stirred for 3 h at 50° C. in an oil bath. The resulting mixture was concentrated under vacuum, diluted with 10 mL of H2O, and the pH adjusted to 4-5 with 1N HCl. The resulting solids were collected by filtration and dried in an oven under reduced pressure. The crude product (80 mg) was purified by Flash-Prep-HPLC (CH3CN/H2O; Detector, UV 254 nm), affording 60 mg (78%) of 2,3-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)quinoline-6-carboxylic acid as a yellow solid.
