Procedure
To a solution of 3-bromo-4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde 3 (3.0 g, 16.2 mmol) in absolute methanol (40 mL) was added NaBH4 (0.736 g 19.5 mmol) at 0° C. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 2 hours under nitrogen. The solvent was then removed under vacuum. Water and ethyl acetate were added and the organic layer was washed with water, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated under vacuum to afford the compound 4 (3.021 g, 100%) as a white powder.
