Procedure
4-(2-Chloro-phenyl)-2-oxo-3-butenoic acid methyl ester (4.9 g, 21.9 mmol) prepared in Step 2 and 4-bromophenylhydrazine hydrochloride (5.0 g, 22.4 mmol) was added to acetic acid (50.0 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at 125° C. for 3 hours, concentrated under reduced pressure, and then ethyl acetate was added thereto. The reaction mixture was washed with a saturated solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate, dried on anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then concentrated under reduced pressure to give a yellow liquid residue. The resulting yellow liquid residue was crystallized from diethyl ether to give 5.3 g of the titled compound as a white solid.
