Procedure

To stirred solution of 2-methyl-3-nitrobenzoic acid (50 g, 276 mmol) in conc. H2SO4 (200 mL), 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethyl-2,4-imidazolidinedione (43.4 g, 152 mmol) was added portion wise at room temperature, and stirring was continued at room temperature for 5 h. On completion, the mixture was poured into ice cold water, the resulting solid was filtered, washed with water and dried under vacuum to give 5-bromo-2-methyl-3-nitrobenzoic acid (71.7 g, 99.9%).
