Procedure
2,5-dichlorobenzoic acid (5 g, 26.2 mmol) was added to cooled conc. H2SO4 (50 mL) at −10° C. in small portions. After 10 minutes nitrating mixture {prepared by mixing Conc. HNO3 (2.5 mL) with conc.H2SO4 (10 mL)} was added drop wise at −10° C. The resulting reaction mixture was stirred at −10° C. for 2 h. On completion, the reaction mixture was poured into ice cold water and a solid precipitated. The solid was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried under vacuum to give 2,5-dichloro-3-nitrobenzoic acid (3.4 g, 65%).
