Procedure
To a solution of 2-methyl-3-nitrobenzoic acid (10.0 g, 55.0 mmol) in 120 ml of methanol, was added conc. H2SO4 (15 ml) at room temperature and the mixture stirred at 60° C. overnight. The mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, the crude material was neutralized with sat. NaHCO3, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound (10 g).
