Participants
| Role | Name | HCID | Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactant | 3,5-Di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acid | HCID 15007 | — |
| Reactant | Thionyl Chloride | HCID 24386 | — |
| Product | 3,5-Di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoyl chloride | HCID 3787187 | — |
Reaction Steps
27 g (108.1 mmol) of 3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acid are added in portions to 70 ml of ice-cooled thionyl chloride. After complete dissolution, the mixture is heated under reflux for one hour. The excess thionyl chloride is then eliminated by distillation in vacuo and the dry residue crystallises by cooling.
