Procedure
A solution of 535 mg of ethyl 2-{N-[(2'-methoxalylbiphenyl-4-yl)methyl]-N-(2-methoxyethyl)amino}nicotinate [prepared as described in step (a) above] dissolved in 4.5 ml of dioxane and a 1N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide were mixed, and the resulting mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 19 hours. At the end of this time, the dioxane was removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and 4.5 ml of 1N aqueous hydrochloric acid was added to the residual aqueous solution. The crystals thus precipitated were collected by filtration, to give 306 mg of the title compound, melting at 173° C. (with decomposition).
