To a room temperature suspension of 5-[2-[(2,6-dichloro-3-methylphenyl)amino]phenyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2(3H)-thione (1.706 g, 4.85 mmoles) in 70 ml of methanol is added dropwise 5.0 ml of 1.0N sodium hydroxide. The clear pale yellow solution is stirred at room temperature for 10 minutes. Iodomethane (320.0 μl, 5.13 mmoles) is added dropwise, and stirring is continued for six hours. The white solid is collected by filtration and dried in vacuo overnight at 60° C. to provide 1.530 g (86%) of 2,6-dichloro-3-methyl-N-[2-[5-(methylthio)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl]phenyl]benzenamine, mp 170°-171° C.
