Reaction Steps
Sodium hydroxide 3.0 M (8.7 ml) was added to a suspension of 4-hydroxybezenesulfonic acid sodium salt (5.0 g, 22.0 mmol), 4-chloromethyl-2-methylquinoline (5.0 g, 26.0 mmol) and sodium iodide (0.4 g, 2.7 mmol) in ethanol (80 ml). The reaction was heated to reflux for 18 h, allowed to cool to room temperature to crystallize a white solid. The solids were filtered off, washed with ethanol, chloroform and dried in vacuo to give 4-[(2-methyl-4-quinolinyl)methoxy]benzenesulfonic acid sodium salt (5.5 g, 73%) as a crystalline solid. MS found: (M−Na)−=328.
