Procedure
A solution of the fluoropyridine (3-3, 38 mg, 0.116 mmol) in 80% acetic acid in water (13 mL) was heated at 110° C. for 10 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo, partitioned between ethyl acetate and 0.5N-NaOH. The organic layer was washed with brine, separated, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo. Trituation of the crude solid with ethyl acetate afforded the desired intermediate (3-4); 1H NMR (500 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 13.5 (s, 1H), 11.7 (bs, 1H), 11.6 (s, 1H), 8.28 (d, 1H, J=8.6 Hz), 7.85 (s, 1H), 7.60 (d, 1H, J=7.8 Hz), 7.55 (dd, 1H, J=8.5, 1.5 Hz), 7.50 (d, 1H, J=6.8 Hz), 7.45 (d, 1H, J=8.1 Hz), 7.16 (d, 1H, J=1.9 Hz), 7.12 (dt, 1H, J=8.1, 0.98 Hz), 7.02 (t, 1H, J=1.9 Hz), 6.69 (d, 1H, J=1.9 Hz), 6.62 (dd, 1H, J=6.8, 1.7 Hz).
