4,6-dihydroxy-2-(4-fluorophenyl)pyrimidine (11 g, 53 mmol) described in European patent No. 136976A was gradually added to fuming nitric acid (100 mL) at 0° C. The reaction temperature was raised to room temperature, and the mixture was stirred for 15 hours. The reaction mixture was poured onto ice-water (150 mL), and then neutralized with sodium carbonate at 0° C. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration and dried to give the objective compound as a solid (9.2 g, 68%).
