A solution of oxone (521 mg, 0.850 mmol, 1.30 equiv) in water (10 mL) was added to a solution of 2-(methylthio)-4-(1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)pyrimidine (1-5, 175 mg, 0.652 mmol, 1 equiv) in methanol (20 mL) at 23° C., and the resulting mixture was stirred for 20 hours. The reaction mixture was partitioned between brine and ethyl acetate (3×75 mL). The combined organic layers were dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to give 2-(methylsulfonyl)-4-(1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)pyrimidine (1-7) as a white solid.
