A solution that consists of 800 mg (4.25 mmol) of 5-nitro-2-methylquinoline in 20 ml of tetrachloromethane is mixed with 11 mg (0.04 mmol) of benzoyl peroxide and 794 mg (4.46 mmol) of N-bromosuccinimide. The reaction mixture is allowed to reflux for 8 hours in the presence of UV light. Insoluble components are filtered off, and the filtrate is concentrated by evaporation. After purification on silica gel with hexane-ethyl acetate (0–100%), 320 mg (28% of theory) of the product is obtained.
