Procedure
The general procedure was used to convert 4-iodotoluene and thiophenol to the title product. Purification by flash chromatography (hexane as the eluent) gave the analytically pure product as a clear oil (379 mg, 94% yield). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.22–7.08 (m, 7H; Ha, Ha′, Hc, Hc′, Hd, Hd′, He) 7.04–7.00 (d, J=7.91, 2H; Hb, Hb′), 2.25 (s, 3H; methyl protons). 13C NMR (75 MHz, CDCl3) δ 137.54 (C4), 137.09 (C1′), 132.24 (C2, C6), 131.24 (C1), 130.03 (C3, C5), 129.72 (C2′, C6′), 128.99 (C3′, C5′), 126.35 (C4′), 21.09 (C7). Anal. Calcd. for C13H12S: C, 77.95; H, 6.04; S, 16.01; Found C, 78.00; H, 6.06; S, 15.88.
