3-Amino-5-(4-fluorophenyl)-6-(1-isopropyl-6-oxo-1,6-dihydro-3-pyridyl)-2-pyrazinecarboxamide (30 g) was suspended in dioxane (60 ml) and 2N aq. NaOH (600 ml). The mixture was heated at 90° C. with stirring for 4 hours. The above reaction mixture was cooled to 25-30° C. The pH of the suspension was adjusted to 2.5 with 35% HCl (105 ml). The precipitate was collected by filtration and washed with water and dried in vacuo at 50° C. for 15 hours to give 3-amino-5-(4-fluorophenyl)-6-(1-isopropyl-6-oxo-1,6-dihydro-3-pyridyl)-2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid as yellow powder.
