Procedure
To a three necked flask was added fluvastatin methyl ester (3.0 g) and NaOH (1 eq.) dissolved in MeOH (7.5 ml). The mixture refluxed for 6.5 h. Then, acetonitrile (50 ml) was added dropwise to the refluxing solution over 10 min. The mixture was then cooled to room temperature and stirred for 46 h. The product was isolated by filtration under nitrogen, washed with acetonitrile (50 ml) and dried at 50° C. in a vacuum oven for 24 h to obtain 1.84 g (60.7%) of fluvastatin sodium Form XLVIII.
