Fluvastatin methyl ester (3.0 g) was dissolved in a solution of NaOH (0.29 g) in MeOH (7.5 ml) by heating to reflux. The clear solution was stirred at reflux for 85 min and acetonitrile (50 ml) was added. The solution was cooled to room temperature and stirred over night. The product was isolated by filtration under nitrogen, washed with acetonitrile (50 ml) and dried at 50° C. in a vacuum oven for 25.5 h to obtain 0.97 g of fluvastatin sodium Form XCVIII.
