Procedure

Fluvastatin methyl ester (5.0 g) was dissolved in acetonitrile (100 ml) by heating. At 50° C. a solution of NaOH (1 eq.) in water (1.25 ml) was added and the mixture was stirred at this temperature for 2 h, then cooled to room temperature and stirred over night. The product was isolated by filtration under nitrogen, washed with acetonitrile (30 ml) and dried at 50° C. in a vacuum oven for 24 h to obtain 1.75 g (34.5%) of fluvastatin sodium Form CV.
