Reaction Steps

A mixture of 3.5 g (8.4 mmol) of 4-Octyloxy-benzoic acid (4′-hydroxy-biphenyl-4-yl) ester, 7.88 g (25 mmol) of 1,11-Dibromoundecane, 3.45 g (25 mmol) of K2CO3 and 50 mL of dry butanone is refluxed for 24 h, then allowed to return to room temperature. The reaction mixture is filtered off and the butanone is distilled off under reduced pressure. The crude product purified by column chromatography on silica gel using CH2Cl2 as eluent gives a pure product as a white solid (5.35 g, 85% yield).
