A solution of 7 g of 5-bromomethyl-3-methylisoxazole in 20 ml of acetonitrile was added dropwise to a solution of 12.2 g of 2-aminoethanol in 100 ml of acetonitrile below 10° C. After stirring for a while at room temperature, the acetonitrile and excess-2-aminoethanol were removed under reduced pressure. Chloroform was added to the residue, and it was washed with a small quantity of water. The treatment of the chloroform solution the usual way gave the desired 2-(2-methyl-5-isoxazolylmethylamino)ethanol. The yield was 4.4 g.
