Procedure

To a cold (0° C.) solution of the 5,5,5-trifluoroleucine HCl salt (from Step 1 above) in H2O (30 mL) was added 1M aqueous NaOH (60 mL, 60 mmol) followed by acetic anhydride (3.5 mL, 36.7 mmol). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 min to 1 h. After acidification with 6M aqueous HCl (6 mL), the mixture was extracted with EtOAc (6×). The combined EtOAc extracts were washed with brine, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The residue was swished with hexanes:Et2O (1:1) to afford N-acetyl-5,5,5-trifluoroleucine as a white solid.
