Procedure

To a solution of triethyl 3-[1-(2-hydroxyethyl)cyclohexyl]-1,1,1-propanetricarboxylate (230 mg) in dichloromethane (6 mL) were added diacetic acid iodobenzene (213 mg) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy free radical (9.3 mg) at room temperature. The solution was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. Diethyl ether was added to the solution, and it washed in turn with an aqueous sodium thiosulfate solution, 1N hydrochloric acid, saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution and saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution. The solution was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then, concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound. This product was subjected to the subsequent step without further purification.
