Procedure
To 167 mg (0.4756 mmol) of ethyl-6-(2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-7-thiochromanyl)ethynyl-nicotinate (Compound 3) was added 5 ml of ethanolic KOH solution. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 48 hours. The ethanol was then removed in vacuo and the residue was taken up in water and ether. The layers were separated and the aqueous layer was acidified to Ph=2 with 1N HCl and then extracted with ether. The organic extracts were combined and washed successively with water and saturated sodium chloride solution and then dried (MgSO4). The solvent was removed in vacuo to give the title compound as a yellow solid.
