Procedure
To 207.2 mg (0.572 mmol) of ethyl-4-(2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-7-chromanyl) ethynyl-benzoate (Compound 4) was added 5 ml of ethanolic KOH solution. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 48 hours and the solvent was then removed in vacuo. The residue was taken up with water and ether and the layers were separated. The aqueous layer was acidified to Ph~2 with 1N HCl and extracted with ether. The ether layer was then washed with water and saturated sodium chloride and then dried (MgSO4). The solvent was removed in vacuo to give the title compound as a pale yellow solid.
