Procedure

Dissolve 1.70 g of 1-[N-Benzyloxycarbonyl-(S)-alanyl]octahydroindole-2(S)-carboxylic acid in 100 ml of methanol. Add 0.40 g 10% palladium-on-charcoal and hydrogenate the mixture at atmospheric pressure. Filter the mixture and concentrate in vacuo to give 1-[(S)-alanyl ]octahydroindole-2(S)-carboxylic acid, a white solid [α]D26 -18.5° (ethanol), m.p. 163°-165°.
