Procedure

A solution of the product from step B (E and Z isomers) (2.3 g, 6.8 mmol) in methanol (50 ml) was treated with 2N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (7 ml, 14 mmol) for 1 hour. Methanol was then evaporated and the solution was acidified to pH 5.5 with 6N HCl. The resulting precipitate was triturated in ether and filtered to give 4-(-2-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-(imidazol-1-yl)-prop-1-en-1-yl)benzoic acid as a mixture of E and Z isomers 1.4 g (65%).
