To a solution of 4-isopropoxy-2-phenyl-2-tetrahydrofuroic acid, ethyl ester (189 mg, 0.68 mmol) in 4 ml of TFA was added triethylsilane (395 mg, 3.40 mmol). After heating at 70° C. for 4 h, the reaction mixture was poured into NaHCO3 (saturated) and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extracts were washed with brine and dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated. The residue was purified by preparative TLC eluting with ethyl acetate/hexane=5:95 to give ethyl 2-phenyl-2-tetrahydrofuroate (170 mg).
