Reaction Steps

A reaction mixture of phenothiazine-10-carbonyl chloride (261 mg, 1.0 mmol), metronidazole (165 mg, 0.96 mmol) and pyridine (4 ml) was heated at 90° C. for 4 h. After cooling, water was added. The mixture was filtered. The collected solid was washed with 5% aqueous Na2CO3 and H2O, and then dried. The crude solid was recrystallized from EtOH to give 201 mg (53.28%) 2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole-1-ethyl phenothiazine-10-carboxylate. m.p.: 198-200° C.
