Procedure
A mixture of the benzoin from Step 2 (2.2 g, 6.9 mmol) and bismuth oxide (4 g, 8.6 mmol) in acetic acid (25 ml) was heated at 90° C. for 45 minutes. The hot reaction mixture was filtered and the filtrate concentrated in vacuo to give 2.0 g (90%) of a solid suitable for use without further purification: mp 109-110° C. Anal. Calc'd. for C17H16O4S (MW 316.40): C, 64.54; H, 5.10; S, 10.13. Found: C, 64.59; H, 5.02; S, 10.29.
