Procedure
2-(2-Chloro-4-methanesulfonylbenzoyl)-cyclohexane-1,3-dione (6.6 g, 0.02 mole) was dissolved in 50 ml of methylene chloride. Bromine (2.9 g, 0.018 mole) dissolved in 50 ml of methylene chloride was added dropwise over a period of 75 minutes to the above solution which was cooled with a dry ice-isopropanol bath. Upon completion of the addition, the reaction mixture was stirred an additional 2 hours at room temperature. The reaction mixture was then concentrated under vacuum to afford 8.5 g of the desired product as a semi-solid. It was identified as such by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectroscopy. The product can be further purified by column chromatography.
