Reaction Steps
0.088 g (0.446 millimoles) of barium carbonate are stirred in 15 ml propionic acid at 100° C. until all the barium carbonate is dissolved. The colorless solution is evaporated in vacuo. The residue is dissolved in 10 ml of methanol whereupon the solution is poured into a suspension of 1.0 g (0.887 millimoles) of primycin sulfate and 60 ml of methanol. The suspension is heated to boiling for 10 minutes under constant stirring. The precipitated barium sulfate is filtered hot over a Celite filtration auxiliary agent. The filtrate is evaporated in vacuo. The residue is treated with 20 ml of a 2:1 mixture of acetone and water and filtered. Thus 0.95 g of beige colored primycin propionate is obtained, yield 91.3%. Mp.: 170° C., /α/D25 =+36.9°.
