Procedure
A solution of 2.02 g of 5-(p-methoxybenzylthio)nicotinic acid in hydrochloric acid-methanol is refluxed. The reaction mixture is concentrated. To the residue is added a mixture of chloroform and water. The mixture is extracted with chloroform. The chloroform layer is dried and evaporated to dryness. The resulting residue is recrystallized from isopropyl ether, giving methyl 5-(p-methoxybenzylthio)nicotinate melting at 72°-74° C.
