A solution of 1-acetyl-4-(4-nitrophenyl)piperazine (28.8 g) in ethanol (400 ml) was hydrogenated at 4 bar in the presence of 10% palladium/carbon (0.5 g) until no further hydrogen was taken up. The catalyst was filtered off and the filtrate was evaporated. The residue was triturated with diethyl ether, filtered and dried to give the title compound (23.8 g), m.p. 142°-144° C.
