Procedure
In the manner described in Example 99, (2E,4Z)-5-(2-methoxyphenyl)-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,4-pentadienoic acid methyl ester (1.8 g) was saponified in a refluxing mixture of methanol (15 mL) and 1N NaOH (15 mL). After 1 hour the reaction was worked up in the usual fashion ant the crude acid was crystallized from 2-propanol to afford 1.1 g of (2E,4Z)-5-(2-methoxyphenyl)-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,4-pentadienoic acid. A sample was recrystallized from 2-propanol-hexane to give the analytical specimen, mp 159°-161° C.
