As in Example 115, (E,E)-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,4-octadienoic acid 2.47 g) and 4-nitrophenol (1.5 g) in 15 mL of dichloromethane was treated with 1,3-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide 1.86 g). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 days. Crystallization of the crude product from 2-propanol furnished 2.5 g of (E,E)-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,4-octadienoic acid 4-nitrophenyl ester, mp 90°-92° C.
