To a solution of (±)-trans-3-(5,6-dihydro-4H-pyrrolo[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-1-yl)-4-(3-methoxyphenyl)pyrrolidine-2,5-dione in dichloromethane (10 mL) at −78° C. under an atmosphere of nitrogen was slowly added boron tribromide (1.0 M in dichloromethane) (5.2 mL). The resulting mixture was stirred at −78° C. for 30 minutes and at room temperature for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to −78° C. then quenched by the addition of methanol (5 mL). The mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and maintained at room temperature for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was diluted with dichloromethane (80 mL), washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate (15 mL), water (15 mL) and saturated sodium chloride (15 mL). The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated to dryness. The residue was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel eluting with ethyl acetate:hexane:dichloromethane (5:5:1, v/v) to give (±)-trans-3-(5,6-dihydro-4H-pyrrolo[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-1-yl)-4-(3-hydroxyphenyl)pyrrolidine-2,5-dione as a brown solid (1.15 g, 63%); Mp 108-110° C. 1H NMR (CDCl3) 400 MHz δ: 8.69 (s, 1H), 7.18 (t, 1H, J=8.0 Hz), 7.12 (d, 1H, J=8.0 Hz), 6.99 (d, 1H, J=6.8 Hz), 6.97 (d, 1H, J=2.0 Hz), 6.93 (d, 1H, J=6.4 Hz), 6.76 (m, 1H), 6.69 (d, 1H, J=1.6 Hz), 5.67 (brs, 1H), 4.32 (d, 1H, J=6.0 Hz), 4.20 (d, 1H, J=6.0 Hz), 4.07 (t, 2H, J=5.6 Hz), 2.96 (t, 2H, J=6.0 Hz), 2.19 (m, 2H), LC/MS: 347.3 [M+H].
