7,7-Dimethyl-5-pentyl-5,7-dihydro-1H,3H-imidazo[4,5-f]indole-2,6-dione (3.80 g) is suspended in phosphoryl chloride (39 ml) and heated under reflux for 5 h. After re-cooling to RT the dark reaction mixture is poured into ice-water (1 l) and heavily stirred. The aqueous phase is made alkaline and extracted with CH2Cl2. The combined organic layer is washed with brine, dried over MgSO4 and evaporated to give F1 (2.85 g) as a dark oil.
