Procedure
To 4-chloro-1,2-difluorobenzene (25.0 g, 168.3 mmol) cooled to 0° C. was added fuming nitric acid (50.0 ml, 168.3 mmol) dropwise over 30 minutes. The solution was warmed to room temperature and stirred for 2 hours. The solution was poured slowly over ice and the resultant mixture extracted with diethyl ether. The diethyl ether layers were washed with brine, dried with Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to afford the product (28 g, 81% yield) as orange oil. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz) δ 7.89 (s, 1H), 7.46 (s, 1H).
