A solution of 2 g. of the product of step B in 50 ml. of dichloromethane is treated with 2.0 g. of dinitrogen tetraoxide, and the mixture is stirred at about 20° C. for about 18 hours. The mixture is evaporated, and the residue obtained is recrystallized from aqueous ethanol to provide yellow crystals of 3-(4'-bromophenyl)-2-nitronaphtho-[1,2-b]furan, m.p. 230°-233° C.
