tert-Butyl bromoacetate (0.082 ml, 0.56 mmol, 1.3 equiv) was added to a mixture of NaOt-Bu (50 mg, 1.2 equiv) and 1-hydroxy-3,8-dithia-cyclopenta[a]indene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester (113 mg, 0.43 mmol, 1 equiv) in DMF (10 ml). The resulting mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 16 hr. Addition of water followed by extraction with EtOAc and washing with water left crude product. Purification by column chromatography gave 140 mg (86%) of 1-tert-butoxycarbonylmethoxy-3,8-dithia-cyclopenta[a]indene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester as an orange solid.
