Reaction Steps

To a solution of 5.53 g (0.03 mol) of 10,11-dihydro-5H-pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzodiazepine in 50 mL of 1,4-dioxane was added 3.64 g (0.03 mol) of N,N-dimethylaniline followed by 6.50 g. of 4-biphenylcarbonyl chloride. The reaction solution was allowed to stand at room temperature for 2 hours and then slowly poured into 2 L of water. On cooling the mixture a crystalline white solid was formed which was collected and dried to provide the title compound (9.5 g). The product was used directly in the next step.
