Procedure

A solution of 2-(2-methoxy-ethyl)-5-(pyridin-3-ylamino)-thiazole-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (0.17 g, 0.56 mmol) in methanol (1.00 ml) was treated with a 2.55 N solution of KOH in water (0.66 ml). The mixture was stirred at 55° C. for 40 min, then the volatiles were evaporated. The residue was redissolved in water (1.30 ml) and acidified to pH 3 with 1N HCl. Filtration and drying under vacuum afforded 2-(2-methoxy-ethyl)-5-(pyridin-3-ylamino)-thiazole-4-carboxylic acid (0.08 g, 50%), MS (ISP): m/e=278.1 (M−H)
