Procedure
A mixture of the 5-benzylthien-2-ylglyoxylate (1.37 g, 0.005 mole), potassium hydroxide (0.66 g, 0.01 mole), dioxane (3.3 ml), ethanol (33 ml) and H2O (6.6 ml) was stirred 3 hrs. at 27° C. The reaction mixture was concentrated and chilled to induce crystallization of 0.9 g of the potassium salt of 5-benzylthien-2-ylglyoxylic acid.
