2-Ethylamino-4-(2-aminoethyl)thiazole (0.20 g, 1.17 mmol) and acetic acid (0.02 ml, 0.35 mmol) were dissolved in methanol (15 ml) and treated with formaldehyde (0.095 ml of a 37% aqueous solution, 1.17 mmol). The reaction was allowed to stir at room temperature for 15 minutes; it was then concentrated in vacuo and subjected to column chromatography (eluant: 89:10:1 chloroform: methanol: concentrated aqueous ammonium hydroxide). This provided the title product as a yellow solid (0.105 g, 0.57 mmol, 49% yield).
