A mixture of 4.5 parts of 6-[1-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl]-1H-benzotriazol-1-ol monohydrochloride, 3.12 parts of iodoethane, 3.7 parts of sodium carbonate and 63 parts of N,N-dimethylformamide was stirred for 4 hours at room temperature. The reaction mixture was evaporated and the residue was taken up in water. The product was extracted with methylbenzene. The extract was dried, filtered and evaporated. The residue was crystallized from a mixture of 27 parts of ethyl acetate and 21 parts of 2,2'-oxybispropane. The product was filtered off and dried, yielding 2.26 parts (51.6%) of 1-ethoxy-6-[1-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl]-1H-benzotriazole; mp. 81.1° C. (compound 215).
