5.84 Grams of 4-hydroxy-6-(3-trifluoromethylphenylthio)-2-hexanone were dissolved in 58 ml of toluene, and 0.62 g of oxalic acid was added thereto. The resulting mixture was refluxed for 4 hours with stirring, allowed to cool and then treated in the same manner as in Production example 34. Thus, 5.26 g of 6-(3-trifluoromethylphenylthio)-3-hexen-2-one (trans : cis =2.9 : 1) were obtained (purity: 98.5%). Further, the product was column chromatographed to obtain a purified product having a refractive index (nD25.5) of 1.5222. The yield was 94.5%.
