Procedure

14.51 g (50 mmol) of the 2-benzoyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-9H-pyrrolo[3,4-b]quinolin-9-one are dissolved in 50 ml of a 1 N solution of sodium methylate in absolute methanol, the solution concentrated by evaporation, the residue taken up in 150 ml of dimethyl formamide and 3.15 ml of methyl iodide are added. After stirring for 4 hours at room temperature, appoximately 100 ml of water are added to the mixture, filtration is effected and the residue is washed with water and dried. The 2-benzoyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-methyl-9H-pyrrolo-[3,4-b]quinolin-9-one used in Example 1 is obtained. M.P. 285° (decomposition).
