Reaction Steps

L-Alanine methyl ester hydrochloride salt (14 g, 0.1 mol) was dissolved in dichloromethane (150 mL) and treated with triethylamine (30.45 g, 0.3 mmol). The solution was stirred and propionyl chloride added dropwise. After stirring overnight the mixture was quenched by addition of 1 M hydrochloric acid (200 mL) and the organic layer separated. The aqueous layer was re-extracted with dichloromethane (3×200 mL) and the combined organic layers were dried with magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated to a to a clear oil (16.0 g, quant.).
